The World Is Not for Sale: Farmers Against Junk Food (After reading part 1)
Hello, everyone! Welcome to my blog. In this post, I will briefly summarize Part 1: "Two Fighting Farmers" and write down some of my thoughts.
The book was mostly written in an interview format. The authors, José Bové and François Dufour, answered the interviewer's questions. Both are farmers and are in the French Farmers' Confederation.
Part 1 was mainly about farmers dismantling an underconstructed McDonald's in Millau, southwest France, on August 12, 1999. One of the authors, José Bové, was a part of this activity. He was sent to jail along with some other farmers. This protest was held in opposition to the agricultural model of food being solely industrial. During José's imprisonment, François Dufour often kept in touch with José and supported the demonstration.
José Bové stated that demonstrating in front of a lot of people, including the press, in broad daylight.
The latter half of Part 1 was about José Bové and François Dufour before the incident. José was in action before François, and together they joined the "workers-farmers" movement. This movement later became the French Farmers' Confederation in 1987.
Personally, I am not too fond of fast food. On the other hand, I also thought of fast food as easy to get and rather reasonable in price. I was surprised at their actions and their conviction.
